Frequently Asked Questions

Dekavie FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is polyethylene?

It is a clear thermoplastic polymer used to make plastic packaging. Dekavie patio boards are made of high-density (HD) polyethylene from containers of windshield washer fluid, detergent, orange juice, etc. These recycled materials are processed, pelletized and reused, hence the 100% eco-friendly concept of our product.

Why use Dekavie boards instead of wood?

First, to help protect the environment. Second, once your patio or terrace is finished, no more maintenance (painting, staining, or sanding) is required.

Will the Dekavie boards degrade through the years?

The colour of the boards will fade very slightly after a few years (comparable to the wear of vinyl). However, its resistance will remain the same as it was when it was installed.

In full sun, will Dekavie boards get warmer than wood?

In summer, all materials get warm. In full sun, dark-coloured materials will be warmer than pale ones. Keep in mind that plastic will not be warmer than any other material, but do consider the orientation of the sun to your patio when choosing a colour.

What tools do I need to install Dekavie boards?

You will need the same tools as for working with wood. No specific tools are needed and no sandblasting is required.

What exactly does the 25-year warranty cover?

The warranty covers cracking, rotting and excessive discolouration.

Can I paint or stain my patio after a few years?

Under no circumstances should you paint or stain Dekavie boards. At first glance, it might look good, but the slightest scratch would chip the paint off. The result would not be satisfactory, and the warranty would no longer apply.

Are there any specific construction guidelines?

Here are the three rules to follow when building your patio:

  • Install joists every 12 inches.
  • Do not install boards end-to-end lengthwise.
  • Install the boards at a temperature between 41 °F and 77 °F (5 °C and 25 °C).

As they are tongue-and-groove boards, does water go through them?

Yes, water will get through at the grooves. If your structure is made of wood, we recommended installing a protective membrane on the joists to protect them from rotting.

If you have storage under the patio, you can build a plywood panel surface covered with a waterproofing membrane before installing the Dekavie boards.

Where can I find Dekavie boards?

At our warehouse in Saint-Dominique and at some specialized retailers. We also offer a delivery service anywhere in Québec, with additional freight charges.

Can the Dekavie planks be used as a load-bearing structure?

No. Although the product is very resistant, it is not as structural as wood, and could not support the weight of your patio. It would not break, but would ripple.

I will not build my patio by myself. Can you recommend a specialist to install my Dekavie boards?

Yes, we can recommend competent professionals who have been working with us for a few years. They will be able to determine your material needs, provide a quote, and build your patio.

What are the maintenance and cleaning guidelines?

Patio boards do not require any specific maintenance. For cleaning, use a mild, preferably eco-friendly soap, then rinse with clean water. We recommend using a pressure washer. For staining liquids such as wine, rinse with water. We recommend laying a rug underneath your BBQ to protect the boards from cooking grease.

Are the boards slippery [AV9] when wet, or during winter?

Dekavie boards are highly anti-slip, so they are not slippery, even when wet. However, snow can make them a little slippery as it does not stick to the plastic. Therefore,[AV10]  it is important to clear your patio from snow and to be a little more careful as you would be on any other surfaces.

Why are Dekavie boards more expensive than wood?

Basically, the manufacturing process (recycling) is more expensive than that of wood. It is also a high-quality product with a much longer lifecycle. Keep in mind that you will save time and money, as you will not have to stain or paint Dekavie boards. In the end, they will not cost more than wood or other materials[AV11].

Do the boards scratch easily?

No, but if your patio furniture is made of iron, we recommend putting felt pads or slider pads under the legs. In addition, as the colour of the boards is integrated, scratches will hardly show.

Do the boards expand?

Yes, slightly. They will stretch lengthwise in extreme heat and shrink in extreme cold. If you follow our installation method correctly, this phenomenon will not be visible.
